VMware Workstation 6.0.0.45731

Powerful Virtual Machine Software for the Technical Professional

VMware Workstation is powerful desktop virtualization software for software developers/testers and enterprise IT professionals that runs multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC. Users can run Windows, Linux, NetWare, or Solaris x86 in fully networked, portable virtual machines—no rebooting or hard drive partitioning required. VMware Workstation delivers excellent performance and advanced features such as memory optimization and the ability to manage multi-tier configurations and multiple snapshots. With millions of customers and dozens of major product awards over the last six years, VMware Workstation is a proven technology that improves productivity and flexibility. An indispensable tool for software developers and IT professionals worldwide.

VMware Workstation enables users to:

* Configure and test multi-tier applications, application updates, and operating system patches on a single PC
* Easily restore or share archived test environments, reducing repetitive configuration and set-up time
* Streamline computer-based training by allowing students to always start from a \"clean\" state and experiment with multiple operating systems, applications, and tools in secure, isolated virtual machines
* Run software demos of complex or multi-tier configurations on a single laptop
* Accelerate help desk resolution of end-user problems with a library of pre-configured virtual machines

Run 64-bit guest operating systems in virtual machines

Run select Micr$oft Windows, Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu and FreeBSD distributions 64-bit operating systems in virtual machines. Users gain additional freedom and flexibility to work with the operating systems that best suit their needs, including the ability to run 32- and 64-bit operating systems simultaneously on the same physical machine. This 64-bit guest capability is fully supported on select AMD 64 processors, and experimentally supported on Intel VT-enabled processors. A free utility that checks for supported processors is available as part of the download process. Learn more about supported 64-bit guest operating systems and required processors.
Assign up to two virtual processors to a virtual machine

Users can create more realistic and powerful development and testing environments when working with multi-threaded, resource-intensive software. This capability is available for all supported configurations of 32-bit and 64-bit host and guest operating systems running on multi-processor host machines, including dual-core and hyper-threaded, uni-processor machines.
Open and convert third-party virtual machines and images

* Open Micr$oft virtual machines and Symantec Backup Exec (formerly called Live State Recovery) images. In this process, the initial virtual machine or image is left untouched in its native format and any modifications are saved in a much smaller VMware-formatted file that is linked to the initial image.
* Convert Micr$oft virtual machines and Symantec Backup Exec (formerly called Live State Recovery) images into complete, full VMware virtual machines. The initial virtual machine is left untouched.

Users working in a multi-vendor environment can standardize on the VMware platform, or reuse their libraries of physical machine images when building or deploying a virtual infrastructure.
Preview virtual machines before distributing them

Users can open and use a virtual machine in the new VMware Player¹, a free application that opens and plays a virtual machine created by VMware Workstation, GSX Server or ESX Server. This new feature allows users to preview how VMware Player will play virtual machines that can now be distributed freely to colleagues, partners, customers, and clients who do not own VMware products. VMware Player gives users great flexibility in distributing complex applications, complete with a full working environment, in a virtual machine. VMware Player is a free download and anyone can access the growing library of pre-built virtual machines with software from leading vendors at the VMware Technology Network (VMTN) Web site.

¹VMware Player is a free product that is not supported by VMware, either as a standalone product or as part of VMware Workstation 5.5.
Get support for the latest operating systems and processors

Workstation 5.5 offers new host and guest operating system support for the latest distributions from Micr$oft, Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu, Sun Solaris x86, FreeBSD and more. Workstation 5.5 also offers support for new processors from Intel and AMD. Learn more about supported operating systems and processors.
Customize the toolbar to suit your working style

Customize the toolbar icons by simply right-clicking on any of the icons. Users can now easily organize the toolbar to best fit their needs.
Connect your Linux-hosted virtual machines to wireless networks

For Linux hosts, Workstation 5.5 now supports wireless Ethernet adapters used in bridged networking, letting users connect virtual machines to wireless networks. Support for wireless Ethernet adapters is already present for Workstation on Windows hosts.
Easily detect and configure your attached hardware devices

Workstation 5.5 extends existing autodetect support for CD-ROM drives to other hardware devices, making it easier to configure devices for virtual machines. Users can now set a virtual machine to automatically detect floppy drives, sound adaptors, and parallel and serial ports.
Quickly manage your snapshots using the command line interface

Manage snapshots of virtual machines with vmrun commands. Users can now quickly create, delete, list, and go to specific snapshots.
Experience excellent performance with more advanced features

* Enhanced autoconnect automatically reconnnects manually connected USB devices
* Enhanced snapshot manager allows users to select and delete multiple snapshots at once
* Workstation 5.5 emulates a new Ethernet adapter type (the Intel PRO/1000 MT Adapter) for Workstation virtual machines with supported 64-bit guest operating systems
* Enhanced product update checking, including an option to Check Now for any Workstation updates
* On Linux host, the Workstation user interface better represents a chosen desktop appearance theme and supports high- and low-contrast themes for the visually impaired
* Display resizing features, Autofit Guest and Fit Guest Now, on Windows are now available for Linux guests
